How to Win the Amazon Buy Box: A Practical Guide for Sellers and Brand Managers

Written By: Hamza Rafiq

Let’s Start With a Number That Should Worry You

Over 83% of all Amazon sales happen through the Buy Box.

That one button. That single Add to Cart press.

If your offer is not in it, you are competing for the remaining 17% of buyers who scroll down, notice the “Other Sellers” section, click it, compare options, and still choose you.

Most do not bother.

One seller described it perfectly in a forum post after losing the Buy Box on their best product: “This product previously generated over 100 orders per day. Now it only receives a handful.”

Same product. Same listing. Same price.

Just no Buy Box.

That is the reality of Amazon in 2025. The Buy Box is not a nice-to-have metric. It is the difference between a business that works and one that quietly bleeds out.

What the Buy Box Actually Is

When multiple sellers offer the same product, Amazon picks one to feature in the Add to Cart button.

That seller gets the overwhelming majority of sales.

Everyone else gets buried in a section most shoppers never see.

On desktop, customers can at least spot the “Other Sellers” option below the listing. On mobile, it is effectively invisible. Mobile shoppers see one button. They tap it. They move on.

Amazon quietly shifted the Buy Box algorithm in late 2025 to prioritise delivery speed over price. Sellers who had comfortably held the Buy Box for years are suddenly losing 15 to 20% of their Buy Box share despite maintaining competitive pricing. Amazon

The rules changed. Not everyone noticed.

The Algorithm Nobody Fully Understands (But You Still Have to Beat)

Amazon has never published the exact Buy Box formula.

What we know comes from seller data, platform updates, and a lot of painful trial and error.

Here is what actually moves the needle in 2025.

Stage 1: Are You Even Eligible?

Before you can win the Buy Box, you have to qualify for it.

A lot of sellers skip this check and spend weeks optimising pricing when the real problem is they were never eligible to begin with.

You need all of the following:

  • A Professional selling plan at $39.99 per month
  • No active account health warnings or policy violations
  • Products in stock with adequate inventory
  • A competitive landed price
  • Performance metrics above Amazon’s minimum thresholds

Individual sellers cannot win the Buy Box. Full stop.

The performance thresholds that matter:

MetricThreshold
Order Defect RateBelow 1%
Late Shipment RateBelow 4%
Valid Tracking RateAbove 95%
On-Time Delivery RateAbove 97% recommended
Customer Response TimeUnder 24 hours

Miss any of these and your price, your reviews, and your advertising spend become irrelevant.

Stage 2: What Decides Who Actually Wins

Once you are eligible, the algorithm scores your offer against every other eligible seller on the same listing.

Here is what it is looking at.

Delivery Speed: The Factor That Changed Everything

In the past, being on FBA almost guaranteed the Buy Box.

That is no longer true.

Amazon is now rewarding actual delivery time to the customer rather than whether you are using FBA or FBM. If another seller can offer faster regional delivery, even via FBM, they may get the Buy Box. RockitSeller

Same-day and next-day delivery sellers are seeing an 18% higher Buy Box win rate compared to standard shipping offers. Amazon

This is a fundamental shift. Speed now matters more than the label on the box.

FBA still has a strong advantage because it consistently meets Prime delivery standards. But FBA alone is no longer a guaranteed ticket to the Buy Box in competitive categories.

FBM sellers without Premium Shipping are losing the Buy Box to FBA competitors even when priced 2 to 3% lower. Standard 3 to 5 day shipping is no longer competitive for high-velocity products. Nova Analytics

Pricing: Competitive, Not Cheapest

The Buy Box does not go to the cheapest seller.

It goes to the seller with the best overall offer. Price is a big part of that, but it is not everything.

What Amazon actually evaluates:

  • Your landed price (product price plus shipping) versus all other eligible sellers
  • Your price versus the same product on other websites
  • Whether your price is within Amazon’s fair pricing policy threshold

Here is where a lot of brand owners get caught out.

If your product is available cheaper through your wholesale partners, or discounted on your DTC store, Amazon will see it. If the price gap is significant, Amazon will suppress your Buy Box entirely. The Add to Cart button disappears. No seller wins it. Customers see “See All Buying Options” instead.

Amazon’s marketplace processes more than 2.5 million price changes per day across third-party listings. On actively competitive listings in high-velocity categories, the Buy Box can rotate dozens of times per day with prices shifting every few minutes. Hedge Think

Checking your price once a day is not enough.

Inventory: Do Not Let It Get Low

Running out of stock means automatic Buy Box loss. Amazon’s tighter storage limits, down from 6 to 5 months of forecasted sales as of May 2025, make this harder to manage. Feedvisor

But here is the part sellers miss.

You do not have to hit zero to lose the Buy Box. When inventory drops to critically low levels, Amazon starts reducing your rotation share before the stockout even happens. The algorithm interprets low stock as supply risk and starts favouring sellers with deeper inventory behind them.

By the time you notice the Buy Box percentage dropping, your stock situation was already a problem days earlier.

Performance Metrics: The Baseline That Holds Everything Together

On-time delivery rate at 97% or above recommended, valid tracking rate at approximately 99%, customer response time under 24 hours, seller rating, and feedback volume all matter, but less than fulfillment method, price, and inventory. Feedvisor

Think of performance metrics as the floor, not the ceiling. They will not win you the Buy Box on their own. But breaching them will cost you it immediately.

Order Defect Rate must stay below 1%. This covers negative feedback, A-to-Z claims, and chargebacks. One bad week with a fulfillment problem and this can spike fast.

Late Shipment Rate must stay below 4% for FBM orders. FBA removes this risk entirely because Amazon controls the dispatch.

Seller Feedback Score above 4.5 supports Buy Box performance. Below 4 creates a measurable disadvantage in competitive rotations.

Account History: New Accounts Have to Be Patient

Sellers who have been on Amazon for a long time are more likely to win the Buy Box. Amazon’s algorithm favours sellers with a proven track record of sales rated highly by customers. Fluid Marketplaces

New accounts often have eligibility but low rotation share while the algorithm builds confidence in the account.

This is not a bug. It is how Amazon tests new sellers.

The answer is consistent performance over time, not shortcuts.

The Revenue Impact Is Worse Than You Think

Here is the maths that should make this feel urgent.

A 10-percentage-point drop in Buy Box share has a near-linear impact on revenue. A seller who moves from 50% Buy Box share to 40% will see roughly a 20% drop in units sold on that listing, assuming traffic stays constant. Alpha Repricer

A seller losing the Buy Box on a listing generating $40,000 per month does not lose some percentage of that $40,000 proportional to their lost Buy Box share. They lose access to the primary conversion path for 80 to 83% of the listing’s traffic. Hedge Think

That is not a marginal performance issue. That is a cash flow crisis dressed up as a metric problem.

The Things That Kill Your Buy Box That Nobody Warns You About

Unauthorised Resellers on Your Own Listing

This one is genuinely infuriating.

You build a brand. You invest in quality. You earn positive reviews. Then a grey market reseller lists your product at a lower price, wins your Buy Box, and sells product you have no visibility or quality control over.

Your brand takes the reputational hit when something goes wrong with their fulfillment. And you watch your own sales disappear.

The solution is Amazon Brand Registry combined with authorised reseller agreements and active monitoring. Report unauthorised sellers through Brand Registry immediately. Do not wait to see if they go away on their own. They will not.

Pricing Parity Failures Across Channels

If you run a promotion on your DTC site, offer a discount to a wholesale buyer, or have a lower price on eBay, Amazon will find it.

Amazon monitors external pricing constantly. If your Amazon price is not competitive against what exists elsewhere, Buy Box suppression follows.

This is one of the most common sources of Buy Box loss for multi-channel brands and one of the least expected.

The Vendor Central Conflict

If you sell on both Vendor Central and Seller Central, Amazon controls your retail price on Vendor Central listings.

If Amazon discounts your Vendor Central product below your Seller Central price, you have created a pricing conflict on your own listing that you cannot resolve without addressing the underlying commercial model.

Many brands discover this problem after it has already cost them significant Buy Box share.

Buy Box Lost vs Buy Box Suppressed: Know the Difference

These are two different problems with two different fixes.

Buy Box Lost means a competitor now holds the Buy Box on your listing. Your ASIN is active and sellable but the Add to Cart button is attributed to another seller. Revenue impact is direct and immediate. Check Other Sellers, compare prices, review your Account Health metrics. SentryKit

Buy Box Suppressed means Amazon has removed the Buy Box entirely. No seller holds it. The listing may still be visible but there is no Add to Cart button. This is caused by listing policy violations, missing required attributes, price flagged as too high, or a compliance issue. SentryKit

Suppression is often more damaging than losing to a competitor because no sale happens at all, regardless of how competitive your offer is.

How to Actually Improve Your Buy Box Percentage

Step 1: Check your eligibility status first

In Seller Central go to Manage Inventory. Under Preferences, enable the Buy Box Eligible column. Confirm each ASIN is eligible before doing anything else. Fixing pricing on an ineligible listing is wasted effort.

Step 2: Review your landed price against every eligible competitor

Not just the cheapest competitor. Every eligible seller on the listing.

Calculate your price plus shipping and compare it against theirs. If you are more than 2 to 3% above the lowest eligible offer in a competitive category, your rotation share will be affected.

Step 3: Check external pricing parity

Search for your product on Google Shopping, your own website, any wholesale portals, and any other marketplaces where it appears. If you find a lower price anywhere, Amazon has probably already found it.

Step 4: Review your inventory depth

Do not wait for a low stock alert. Review your sales velocity and calculate how many days of stock you have remaining at current pace. Factor in supplier lead time and add a buffer. If you are inside that buffer, reorder immediately.

Step 5: Pull your Account Health metrics

Check ODR, LSR, and VTR against the thresholds. Look at your seller feedback score. Check for any open compliance issues or policy warnings. Fix anything that is close to a threshold before it becomes a threshold breach.

Step 6: Respond to customer messages faster

Set up mobile notifications for Seller Central messages. The target is under 6 hours where possible. Never exceed 24 hours. Response time affects your metrics and your Buy Box ranking.

Step 7: Check for unauthorised sellers

Look at your listing directly from a customer’s perspective. Click “Other Sellers on Amazon” if it appears. If you see sellers you do not recognise selling your branded product, investigate and report through Brand Registry.

What a Buy Box Percentage Drop Is Actually Telling You

A sudden drop in Buy Box percentage without an obvious cause is not random.

Something changed. Your job is to find out what.

Work through this sequence:

  1. Did a new seller appear on your listing at a lower price?
  2. Did your inventory drop significantly?
  3. Did any performance metric breach or approach a threshold?
  4. Did a promotional price appear on an external channel?
  5. Is there a compliance flag or listing suppression in Manage Inventory?

A win rate that is consistently 60% and then drops to 30% without a price change or metrics movement is the signal that something structural has changed, not just normal rotation variance. SentryKit

Do not accept “wait for the Buy Box to return” as an answer. That is what Amazon support will often tell you. It rarely solves anything on its own.

How Primex Group Manages This

Managing the Buy Box properly is a daily job, not a monthly review.

We monitor Buy Box percentage daily across all managed accounts. We check pricing competitiveness continuously, review competitor activity on client listings, and manage inventory reorder points against sales velocity to prevent the stockouts that cause automatic Buy Box loss.

Account health metrics are tracked as core KPIs with proactive management before any metric approaches a threshold breach.

For brand owners dealing with unauthorised sellers, we handle the full process from identification through Brand Registry complaint to resolution.

We work with brands, funded sellers, and investors across Amazon UK, Amazon US, and Amazon UAE. If Buy Box management is consuming too much of your operational attention, or if you are losing Buy Box share and cannot identify why, that is exactly what we are here to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of Amazon sales go through the Buy Box?

Over 82 to 83% of all Amazon sales happen through the Buy Box. On mobile the percentage is even higher because alternative sellers require additional taps that most shoppers simply do not make.

Does the lowest price always win the Buy Box?

No. In late 2025 Amazon shifted the algorithm to prioritise delivery speed over price. An FBA seller at a slightly higher price with faster delivery will often outperform an FBM seller at the lowest price in competitive categories.

What is the difference between losing the Buy Box and Buy Box suppression?

Losing the Buy Box means a competitor holds it and captures your sales. Suppression means Amazon has removed the Buy Box entirely from the listing due to a policy or pricing issue. No seller wins it and no Add to Cart button appears. These are different problems with different fixes.

How do I check my Buy Box percentage?

In Seller Central go to Reports, then Business Reports, then Detail Page Sales and Traffic by Child Item. The Buy Box Percentage column shows the proportion of page visits where your offer held the featured position.

How long does it take to regain the Buy Box after a stockout?

After restocking, recovery typically takes 24 to 72 hours for accounts with strong performance history. Accounts with thinner history may take longer as sales velocity needs to rebuild before the algorithm restores normal rotation share.

Can I win the Buy Box with FBM?

Yes, but it is harder. FBM sellers without Premium Shipping are losing the Buy Box to FBA competitors even when priced 2 to 3% lower. To compete on FBM you need delivery speeds that match or exceed Prime standards, which means Seller Fulfilled Prime enrolment for most competitive categories.
